Have you ever read the statistic that ‘Success is 80% psychology and only 20% mechanics?’ In essence, your psychology is your attitude, your mindset or the ‘state’ / feeling you have at any given moment.

Research demonstrates that we think over 60,000 thoughts a day. If only a quarter of our thoughts are negative that’s 15,000 negative thoughts in one day. When we focus on what we don’t want to happen and what we don’t like about our lives and ourselves, we begin to feel worried, overwhelmed, fearful and often procrastinate. The negative thoughts can literally kick in the flight or fight response in the body and we begin to release a chemical cascade of stress hormones that can make us feel even worse.

The good news is that when you think about the good things happening in your life, you release a chemical cascade of feel good chemicals that leads you to feeling more confident, focused and productive.

I believe Tony Robbins hit the nail on the head when he said,‘What you focus your thoughts on will determine how you feel and how you feel determines the quality of your life.’ You can learn to create a healthy mindset everyday by changing the focus of your thoughts.

For example,  in writing this blog, I could worry and stress about the deadline and making it perfect or I could take a few deep breaths, get myself into a resourceful state and set my intentions for writing it.

Do you know how to get yourself into a resourceful state? Resourceful means, ingenious, or enterprising and its synonyms are imaginative, practical, quick witted, capable and creative. There are number of behavioral technologies that have specific techniques to help you get out of a negative state quickly so that you can almost instantly feel capable, confident and creative.  Utilizing these five techniques can help you change how you feel quickly.  The results?  Less stress, more confidence, creativity and productivity.

  1. Change your physiology – Move your body, stand up tall, smile, stretch, walk, or deep breathe.
  2. Ask yourself resourceful questions – What can I learn from this? What can I do about it?
  3. Change the focus of your thoughts– Think about what you could feel grateful for and write down 10 things everyday. Include what you could feel grateful for that others do for you, too.
  4. Set your intentions – Get clear on the purpose or outcomes ahead of time.
  5. Visualize – Close your eyes and imagine your intentions or desired outcomes already completed with a great feeling.

Did you know that research demonstrates that 95% of our behaviors are subconscious? Did you also know that pictures are the language of the subconscious mind?

A Vision Board also known as a Goal or Dream Board is a creative and effective goal-setting tool because Vision Boards are filled with inspiring pictures (words and quotes, too) that represent what you want personally and professionally. Any time you get the opportunity to easily program or reprogram your subconscious, do it. Programming your subconscious mind is vital to a happy, successful and prosperous life.

The second reason is focus. Whatever you focus on, especially when there is emotion involved, is like holding up a red flag for your subconscious mind and saying, ‘THIS IS IMPORTANT, PAY ATTENTION.’ When you see a picture that you love, your body generates a chemical cascade of feel good hormones, which make you feel good.

For example, imagine you have always wanted to go to the Caribbean, so you put a picture of it on your vision board. You look at the picture and you get this great feeling. When the positive feeling is combined with the image of where you want go, your mind automatically starts to generate more thoughts on the subject. It’s also a lot like a Google search. You search on Google for a pair of slippers and the next thing you know your computer keeps showing you advertisements regarding slippers.

The third reason is because the pictures on your vision board can override limiting beliefs stored in your subconscious mind. If you have a desire to travel but don’t think you can make it happen financially or because of time constraints, those are limiting beliefs. You have heard the statement, ‘when there is a will, there’s a way.’   Beliefs can make us succeed or block us from getting what we want. With a vision board, your subconscious financial or time constraints can almost disappear or end up becoming a non-issue and synchronistically you get invited to a conference or a time share or….

Besides a couple of hours, here’s what you need to create a vision board:

  1. Magazines; collect a handful or two from friends, family, doctor’s office, reuse or thrift shop.
  2. A poster board or science board
  3. Glue stick (because it’s very forgiving, meaning you can change where you put a picture.)
  4. Scissors

Step 1: Write down your goals, short term and long term.

Step 2: Set aside a few hours to cut inspiring and colorful pictures, words and quotes that represent what you want personally and professionally.

Step 3: Create your masterpiece by gluing on what appeals to you.

Step 4: Put it someplace where you see it every day so that your goals are top of mind.
